红发女郎
1978 年，在我使用 8x10 英寸大画幅相机拍摄肖像的第一个夏天，我发现自己被拍摄红发女郎所吸引。
我经常被问到； “为什么是红发”，我经常觉得这是因为在夏天，红发似乎比我们其他人在阳光下绽放得更加绚丽。但也可能是因为我生活在科德角的一角，周围都是蓝色的大海和天空，这让我更加关注红发的华丽品质。他们的头发和皮肤上奇异的斑纹在阳光下变得更加红润，在蓝色的气氛中更加令人惊叹。
红发女郎，就像电影本身一样，会被阳光所改变。现在对我来说，我很自然地会注意到这种新现象，因为它出现在海角本身的更大主题中。第一个月拍摄了 50 多幅肖像画，其中至少有 30 幅是红发女郎，我明白这是一种需要认真对待的冲动。
我在当地报纸《普罗温斯敦倡导者报》上刊登了一则广告：“杰出的人！如果你是红发女郎或认识的人是红发女郎，我想为你做肖像，请打电话……”他们开始来到我的甲板上，他们带着勇气、害羞、好奇心和梦想，分享了自己作为红发女郎的故事。他们谈到了童年的痛苦回忆、侵犯隐私和辱骂——“嘿，红”、“雀斑脸”、“胡萝卜头”。他们还与我分享了他们克服了这个早期的、不受欢迎的名人的个人胜利感，以及他们如何像巨人、侏儒或运动员一样最终成长为自己的特殊性，并通过生存而变得高贵。可以说，他们都经过了自己的火焰洗礼，共同的经历在他们之间结下了“血结”。我开始拍摄肖像的目的是拍摄普通人。但红发既普通又特别。
他们在基因这块蛋糕上所占的份额微乎其微，仅占世界人口的2%或3%。尽管红头发人的国籍和宗教信仰各不相同，但他们往往给人一种强烈的家庭联系的印象。我拍摄肖像的方式不是用手和膝盖跪下，也不是爬上高高的梯子，也不是与名人上床，而是简单地与任何对我来说是年轻或年长的人面对面地站着。我只需要一两张胶片和耐心就能看完。这个新版本的“红发”将有许多新的和以前未见过的肖像。
