迈克尔·肯纳出生于英格兰西北部的工业小镇威德尼斯。肯纳是六个孩子中最小的一个，在一个贫穷的工人阶级爱尔兰天主教家庭长大。他在神学院学习了七年，目的是成为一名牧师，之后他在班伯里艺术学院学习，后来又在伦敦印刷学院学习，然后于七十年代末移居美国。
