Your Favourite Disappointment is a photographic reflection by Stephanie on family, memory, and the complicated space between personal aspirations and inherited expectations. Rooted in the familiar Singaporean experience of navigating filial duty and individual identity, the book explores what happens when the life we choose diverges from the future our parents imagined for us.
Beginning with her departure from a career in finance to pursue photography overseas, Stephanie traces a personal journey towards self-discovery and the growing distance between a father and daughter. Through Polaroid photographs, conversations, and the documentation of her father's recovery following two strokes, she revisits a relationship shaped by unspoken grief, guilt, care, and the desire to be understood.
Neither a straightforward reconciliation nor a simple act of rebellion, the work sits with the contradictions of loving someone whose expectations we cannot always fulfil. As the roles of daughter, caregiver, and photographer begin to overlap, ordinary moments become a way of revisiting what has been said, what remains unresolved, and what can still be held onto.
Intimate and deeply personal, Your Favourite Disappointment asks whether becoming true to ourselves must come at the expense of those we love, and whether understanding can emerge even when words fall short.
