wú běn 无本 Magazine #7

MYR 40.00

Since its inception, wú běn has focused on the “production scenes of local cinema.” Yet in today’s image making ecosystem, “local” is no longer a coordinate that can be easily defined. Some works exist in ambiguous spaces: protagonists who are foreign but carry local narratives; local actors directed by a Taiwanese filmmaker; production funds flowing across borders and post-production teams scattered across multiple cities. So who, then, owns the “nationality” of a film?

Issue No. 7 approaches this question through the theme of “the seven year itch.” In modes of collaboration that cross disciplines, nations, and contexts, a film’s sense of identity is being re-shaped. The so called “itch” is a bodily sensation signaling that as one grows into a new phase, the old layer of skin begins to loosen.

No Budget remains wú běn. We continue to focus on local cinema, documenting its growth, struggles, and transformations. But in this seventh issue, we choose a tone of playfulness and metamorphosis, symbolizing how local filmmaking is entering a more complex, expansive, and cross border stage.

Issue No. 7 is a rebellious “departure.” We invite readers to experience this seventh year “itch” with us: to go to the edges, to the thresholds, to witness the new forms emerging into being.
