WHY PHOTOGRAPHY?

MYR 98.00

Why Photography is not a book that attempts to provide a definitive answer to its own title. Instead, it presents a collection of essays that invites deeper reflection on the role of photography in contemporary life, how images shape our memories, influence our understanding of the world, and connect us to the experiences of others.

Written by Akkara Naktamna, a Thai photo artist and curator born in Bangkok in 1979, the book reflects his years of engagement with photography through both artistic practice and exhibition-making. As the founder of TypeMag and curator at Kathmandu Photo Gallery, Akkara has worked extensively with photographers and visual culture, including curating exhibitions such as Interpreters (2022) at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and Photography Never Lies (2024) at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).

Through these essays, Akkara looks beyond photography as simply a way to record reality. He explores photography as a medium of questioning, interpretation, and connection, one that continues to evolve alongside society. Rather than telling readers what photography should be, the book creates space for personal reflection, allowing each reader to arrive at their own understanding of why photography matters.

For photographers, collectors, and anyone interested in visual culture, Why Photography is a thoughtful companion that encourages a slower and more critical way of looking. It is a book to revisit over time, offering new perspectives each time we return to the images and ideas within its pages.
