Water Refuge by Wei Weng
Water Refuge is an artist book by visual artist Wei Weng, exploring the deep, instinctive bond between humans and water. Created between her temporary home in Denmark and the urban shoreline she frequented, the book documents the quiet ritual of open sea swimmers and the emotional worlds they carry.
Working between land and ocean, Wei transforms household waste and found materials using traditional lacquer techniques, including egg shell inlay and fabric binding, giving discarded objects new form and meaning. Alongside this, she collaborates with swimmers to capture their internal narratives, weaving together image and story.
Blending Danish and Chinese literary influences, Water Refuge reflects on longing, belonging, and humanity’s timeless pull toward the ocean, the vast, nurturing “Ocean Mother.”
