Warm Ice

Warm Ice is an intimate photobook that traces the life of the artist’s mother, a Vietnamese woman who moved to Taiwan in 1997 through marriage seen through the eyes of her son.

From a young age, Tsai Ting Bang’s family existed between Vietnam and Taiwan. His mother’s arranged marriage placed her within the social stereotype of the “Vietnamese bride,” a label often accompanied by prejudice. In the early years of her marriage, she faced discrimination, cultural isolation, and the quiet pressures of adapting to a foreign society.

After the divorce, mother and children were separated for many years. When Tsai was twelve and his father passed away, he returned to live with his mother. Yet reunion did not resolve the fractures of the past; instead, it marked the beginning of a deeper struggle over identity, belonging, and emotional inheritance.

Through photography and personal reflection, Warm Ice examines migration not as an abstract social issue, but as lived experience within a family. The title suggests a quiet contradiction warmth embedded within coldness mirroring the tenderness and distance that coexist in their relationship.

Ultimately, the book becomes both a portrait of a migrant mother and a son’s attempt to understand the layered meaning of home across borders.
