What does the ocean look like when stripped of color?

“...a startling book of deliciously serene images....” — Michael Kenna
In MONOHYDRA, Indonesian Hasselblad Master Hengki Koentjoro descends beneath the surface of the world’s largest archipelago to capture the silent poetry of underwater life. Rendered entirely in black and white, these images transform coral, currents, and marine life into sculptural forms of light and shadow.

By removing color, Hengki reveals structure, texture, and spirit. The sea becomes less about spectacle and more about meditation, an interplay of movement and stillness, presence and void. Each photograph feels suspended in time, tranquil yet powerful, minimal yet deeply immersive.

Launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2015, MONOHYDRA stands as one of the first fine art monochrome underwater photobooks of its kind. Featuring a special foreword by renowned American fine art photographer Michael Kenna and gallerist Bob Tobin, the publication affirms Hengki’s international standing and mastery of tonal range and composition.

A graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Hengki has dedicated decades to exploring the spiritual potential of black and white imagery  balancing light and darkness, complexity and minimalism, the physical and the transcendent.

For collectors of fine-art photography, admirers of monochrome mastery, and those drawn to contemplative image making, MONOHYDRA offers more than underwater documentation. It offers stillness in a restless world and a reminder that beneath the surface lies another realm of quiet beauty.
