Mitsume
Mitsume — Ai Ning Yao
Mitsume is the debut photography monograph by Taiwanese actress Ai Ning Yao, spanning over a decade of her personal reflections. Blending film photography with intimate diary entries, Ai Ning reveals moments of resolution, vulnerability, and quiet wonder—distilling life into fragments as delicate as haiku.
The title Mitsume (みつめ) carries layered meaning: literally “three eyes,” it evokes the camera as a third eye—capturing what we may not notice in the moment. Pronounced the same as mitsumeru (“to gaze attentively”), it resonates with Ai Ning’s process of rearranging past memories in search of her inner self.
Here, fleeting encounters, blurred frames, and light-leaked visions transform into a memoir of living. Shedding her roles on screen, Ai Ning returns to her most genuine form—emerging with raw authenticity through image and word.
“Ensconced in the ocean
You feel safe
and set free to indulge” — excerpt from Ai Ning’s diary
