Meantime #4: Bad Stories
Meantime #4: Bad Stories
What happens when we look at a city through its less than perfect moments?
The fourth issue of Meantime revisits Singapore's past through stories of mischief, vice, and lives lived outside the lines. From motorcycle gangs and lottery sellers to lost liquor, unconventional family histories, and encounters with urban wildlife, Bad Stories uncovers the curious, overlooked, and unexpected sides of a city known for its order and discipline.
Moving beyond conventional historical narratives, the publication brings together photography and personal stories to explore the people, subcultures, and peculiar episodes that have shaped Singapore's social landscape.
The physical book carries the spirit of its subject. A deep die cut slices through the cover, while neon-green printing, foil details, and a risograph insert introduce unexpected elements throughout the publication. Its unconventional form makes Bad Stories as much an exploration of print and design as it is a collection of stories.
Among the most well-regarded names in Singapore's zine community, Meantime is “best known for its shape-shifting,” as described by The Straits Times. Each issue pushes the boundaries of independent publishing, bringing together distinctive storytelling and inventive print design.
Published by Meantime, this issue invites readers to reconsider what makes a story worth telling, especially the ones that fall outside the usual narrative.
Meantime is an independent magazine that documents Singapore's past through personal stories.
