LOESS is photographer Taca Sui's contemplative journey through the ancestral landscapes of China's Central Plains, tracing the traces of history, the remnants of civilisation, and the intangible memories embedded in the land. Over several years of travelling through Shanxi and Henan, Sui has developed a particular affinity for the Heluo Plain and southern Shanxi, places where layers of history seem to conceal something both profound and elusive.
Beginning in Yuncheng, the journey moves north past Hukou Waterfall to Xixian, wanders through villages along the Zhuozhang River Valley, crosses east into the Taihang Mountains, and turns south through Jincheng before arriving at Wangwu Dongtian, veiled in mist. Along the way, fleeting glimpses of ancient civilisation emerge from the vast, weathered landscape, only to recede into the silence of ruins and the weight of time. These moments resist explanation, raising a central question: if something cannot be adequately expressed in words, can it nevertheless be photographed?
After more than a decade of approaching photography through knowledge, reason, and deliberate construction, Sui takes a different path in LOESS. Setting aside his usual attachment to the permanence of images, he allows intuition to guide his wandering and looking. The resulting body of two hundred photographs follows the journey itself, unfolding without an imposed sequence. Each image becomes a fragment of an encounter with a landscape shaped by countless generations.
Closing with a poem by the ancient Chinese poet Tao Yuanming, the book draws a quiet connection between the solitary traveller of the present and those who wandered centuries before. Here, photography becomes more than the recording of visible places; it is an attempt to approach what history has buried, what time has obscured, and what remains beyond language. LOESS invites readers to wander alongside the photographer, attentive to the subtle traces through which the past continues to inhabit the present.
