Josef Koudelka (Photofile)
A photographer of displacement, resilience, and the human condition, Josef Koudelka (b. 1938) is celebrated for his powerful black and white photographs that explore the relationship between people, places, and history. His images carry a remarkable sense of intensity, capturing moments of uncertainty, solitude, and belonging with an unmistakable visual language.
Born in Czechoslovakia, Koudelka gained international recognition for his courageous documentation of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Prague. His photographs revealed the human experience behind political upheaval, becoming some of the most significant images in the history of documentary photography.
Following his departure from his homeland, Koudelka spent decades travelling across Europe and the Middle East, documenting marginalised communities, changing landscapes, and the traces of human presence left behind. From his intimate portraits of Romani communities to his expansive panoramic landscapes, his work reflects a lifelong exploration of freedom, identity, exile, and the passage of time.
Part of the acclaimed Photofile series by Thames & Hudson, this compact volume brings together 66 carefully selected photographs, offering an accessible introduction to Koudelka's extraordinary photographic journey and enduring influence on documentary photography.
An exploration of humanity, memory, and belonging through the uncompromising vision of one of photography's most influential storytellers.
