Born in Lithuania and later based in New York, Jonas Mekas became an important figure in the American avant-garde film scene. Alongside his own film diaries, he documented the people and conversations around him, building a personal record of a changing artistic community.
The book gathers these conversations with figures including Andy Warhol, Agnes Varda, John Cassavetes, Stan Brakhage, Peter Kubelka, Harry Smith, Albert and David Maysles, and others. Mekas photographed his encounters with a camera, selecting a still from each meeting to accompany the interviews, alongside letters and excerpts from related scripts and scenarios.
Rather than a conventional history of cinema, Conversations offers an intimate glimpse into how artists thought, worked and exchanged ideas with one another.
