Hibi

MYR 288.00

Hibi was one of Masahisa Fukase's last bodies of work. In Hibi, Masahisa Fukase turns the ordinary into the extraordinary, transforming ink-stained newspaper pages into a haunting meditation on time, memory, and solitude. What begins as a simple daily ritual becomes an intimate visual diary—each stain, smudge, and mark a quiet echo of days gone by. Poetic, raw, and deeply personal, Hibi invites you to see beauty in the fleeting and meaning in the mundane.

A network of cracks in the asphalt, faded lines and arrows desecrated by the city's countless residents, and aged road markings are all meticulously depicted in the black and white photos. The artist's personal presence is traced on each image, a shadow-presence that appears to provide a reading or interpretation but is never really resolved.

Born in 1934 in Bifuka, Hokkaido, Fukase studied photography at Nihon University, graduating in 1956. After working at the Nippon Design Center and Kawade Shobo Shinsha Publishers, he became a freelance photographer in 1968. His major photobooks include Yugi (1971), Yoko (1978), and the seminal Karasu (Ravens) (1986). Fukase’s work has been exhibited internationally, with notable group shows at MoMA, the Oxford Museum of Modern Art, Fondation Cartier, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He received numerous accolades, including the 2nd Ina Nobuo Award in 1976 and the Special Award at the 8th Higashikawa Photography Awards in 1992.

That same year, Fukase suffered a tragic accident, falling down a flight of stairs and sustaining a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for the remainder of his life. He passed away in 2012, leaving behind a body of work that continues to shape and challenge the landscape of contemporary photography.
