Haru and Mina is the latest edition in Hideaki Hamada’s long-running series documenting the lives of his two children. Drawn from more than 8,000 photographs taken over eleven years (July 2009 – April 2020), Hamada carefully selected 313 images to form this expansive 504-page volume.
The book follows the quiet, ordinary days of childhood, moments so familiar they might easily pass unnoticed, unfolding gently through the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Time moves forward, as it always does, carrying with it the subtle understanding that these shared days will eventually come to an end.
Set against landscapes that feel universally familiar, the photographs awaken something tender and deeply personal. The images invite a soft, lingering nostalgia, as if touching faint memories from one’s own distant past.
At its core, Haru and Mina is a meditation on photography itself: an act of holding time still, of bringing what has passed gently back into the present.
