Grand Amour
Grand Amour — LIN Zhipeng 林志鹏 aka No.223
Youth is often a space of contradictions, playful yet vulnerable, carefree yet burdened by expectations.
In Grand Amour, Chinese photographer Lin Zhipeng, also known as 223, explores the shifting boundaries between intimacy, desire, and youthful freedom. Known for his vivid colours, candid compositions, and unconventional portrayals of young people, Lin creates images that challenge the restraint of conservative social norms. Beneath their apparent spontaneity and lightness, however, lies a more complex emotional landscape, where sensuality, uncertainty, and an intangible sense of longing coexist.
Developed in collaboration with curator Anna Mistal, the project was created over three days at Paris's Grand Amour hotel. Inviting Asian models who responded to his call on social media, Lin constructed a series of intimate encounters using bodies, fruits, flowers, doves, and other everyday objects. The resulting photographs move between staged gestures and fleeting moments, blurring the boundaries between observation and performance, reality and fantasy.
Love, sexuality, eroticism, escapism, and nonconformity emerge not as fixed ideas but as shifting possibilities. The hotel becomes a temporary world in which conventional expectations loosen, allowing youth and desire to unfold in ambiguous and unexpected ways. Yet beneath the vibrant colours and playful imagery, the photographs retain a quiet tension between individual freedom and the pressures of the society beyond the room.
As Lin reflects in his afterword, the camera places him in the role of both observer and intruder, a stranger negotiating intimacy through the sound of the shutter and tentative exchanges. Within this colourful, languid space, the body becomes at once present and dreamlike, revealing a delicate relationship between looking, being seen, and remaining unknowable.
Grand Amour is an exploration of intimacy as both an encounter and an escape, a visual study of youth, desire, and the contradictions that shape our private worlds.
