good day good night

MYR 98.00

"“Good day, good night,” coming from strangers who are also fellows. It is a simple yet powerful phrase, one that continues to make me feel warmth toward this city."

Traversing the days and nights of the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong (2014), the photographic works of South HOintentionally avoid the typical scenes of chaotic protests. Instead, he turns to the quotidian perspective of the occupiers, documenting a landscape that is quiet, calm, and intimate.

These images also serve as the artist’s personal reflection on the movement, a space where passion and loss intertwine, forming a complex sense of paradox and futility.

何兆南 / HO SIU NAM (SOUTH HO)
Photographer

Ho Siu Nam’s artistic practice began with photography and has since expanded into mixed media, performance, and video. His work often integrates photography with painting, where painterly interventions serve as a space for personal reflection and observation. Rather than functioning as straightforward documentation, his images carry emotional, introspective, and conceptual layers.

Ho’s works explore the interplay between personal and collective consciousness through space and time, unfolding an ongoing dialogue with Hong Kong — the city he calls home.

His works have been exhibited internationally at institutions including M+ Hong Kong (2024), Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco (2023), Saatchi Gallery, London (2023), Para Site, Hong Kong (2023), Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (2021), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2020), Asia Society Hong Kong Center (2019), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2018), The Mills, Hong Kong (2018), Museum Folkwang, Essen (2015), Casal Solleric, Palma (2015), and the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (2014). He also participated in the 8th Yokohama Triennale in 2024.

In 2022, Ho co-founded New Park with artist Kwok Ho Chung and researcher Wong Yuen Ting, evolving from the earlier initiative 100 ft. PARK, an independent art space dedicated to fostering dialogue through exhibitions and screenings. Ho was awarded the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Award in 2009.

His works are collected by the Burger Collection (Hong Kong), M+ (Hong Kong), Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Legislative Council, Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (Japan), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA), and Vancouver Art Gallery (Canada). His publications include Space and Energy (2017), commissioned by Tai Kwun Contemporary, Good Day Good Night (2015), and Ordinary Days (2013).

Ho Siu Nam lives and works in Hong Kong.
