FOTM 2025: The Film Awakens continues the story of FOTM, following FOTM 2024, the first book documenting the project and its growing community of film photographers in Malaysia.
Inspired by the spirit of Star Wars, with its sense of discovery, adventure, and new beginnings, The Film Awakens became the theme for FOTM 2025.
Bringing together twelve months of photographs made with different films, cameras, perspectives, and personal ways of seeing, the book reflects the many ways film can shape how we see and experience the world. From everyday moments and intimate portraits to street scenes, landscapes, experiments, and unexpected frames, these photographs capture the curiosity and diversity of the FOTM community.
The book also features five in-depth Field Notes interviews with Malaysian film photographers, exploring their practices, their relationship with film, the cameras and emulsions they return to, and what keeps them shooting.
FOTM began with a simple invitation: shoot a different film every month and see where it takes you. It has since grown into a community shaped by curiosity, experimentation, photowalks, conversations, workshops, and the shared anticipation of waiting for a roll to be developed.
The Film Awakens is more than a collection of photographs. It is a snapshot of a community at a particular moment in time, connected by the same slow and rewarding process of shooting film.
