Ernst Hass (Photofile)
A pioneer of colour photography and a master of movement, Ernst Haas (1921–1986) transformed the way we experience photography through his expressive use of colour, light, and motion. His photographs move beyond straightforward documentation, capturing fleeting moments with a painterly sensitivity that brings everyday scenes to life.
Beginning his photographic journey in Vienna during the 1940s, Haas gained international recognition through his moving photo essay documenting prisoners of war returning from Russia. After relocating to New York in 1951, he continued to explore the possibilities of photography, becoming celebrated for his innovative approach to motion, abstraction, and visual storytelling. His work bridged the worlds of photojournalism, fine art, and commercial photography, establishing a distinctive visual language that continues to influence photographers today.
Part of the acclaimed Photofile series, this compact volume presents 67 carefully selected photographs, accompanied by a critical introduction and bibliography. Thoughtfully produced in a collectible pocket-sized format, it offers an accessible introduction to one of photography's most influential colour photographers.
An exploration of colour, movement, and the extraordinary beauty found in fleeting moments.
