Early Works 1997
Early Works 1997 presents a selection of six photographs by Rinko Kawauchi, printed in exquisite collotype by Kyoto-based master printer Benrido.
Chosen by Kawauchi herself, the six images originate from her 1998 solo exhibition Utatane at Guardian Garden in Tokyo. Many of these early works, created and shown during the formative years of her career, have never been made widely available in photobook form. This collotype mini-portfolio offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the beginnings of Kawauchi’s poetic visual world.
Collotype, one of the oldest pigment-based printing techniques, is renowned for its subtle tonal gradations, smooth texture, and remarkable longevity. Traditionally used to reproduce important cultural works, the process here lends Kawauchi’s early images a timeless and tactile presence.
