Documenting Defu Lane

MYR 38.00

Documenting Defu Lane unfolds as a quiet yet urgent meditation on a landscape in transition situated in the eastern industrial corridor of Singapore, within the Defu industrial estate adjacent to Paya Lebar Airbase. Long designated as part of Singapore’s light-industrial backbone, this area is currently undergoing phased redevelopment, placing Defu Lane among the last remnants of its original spatial and cultural fabric.

In this context, the zine becomes more than an act of observation, it is a temporal record of a site on the cusp of disappearance. The district, though infrastructural in purpose, carries an unexpected rural sensibility: workshop units softened by creeping vegetation, informal adaptations of space, and a rhythm of life that resists the accelerated tempo associated with the city state. Here, time feels elastic, slowed by stillness, marked by quiet cycles of decay and regrowth.

Rendered in the tactile grain of analog photography captured on a Canon AE-1 with Ilford HP5 Plus 400, the images privilege subtlety over spectacle. Light, surface, and texture are treated with care, allowing the environment to speak through its own quiet transformations. The work evokes a kampong like sensibility not as nostalgia, but as an attentiveness to how space is inhabited, adapted, and remembered.

To acquire this zine is to hold a fragment of a vanishing geography within one of Asia’s most rapidly evolving urban landscapes. It is particularly resonant for collectors and readers engaged with contemporary photography, urban memory, and Southeast Asian spatial histories. More than documentation, Documenting Defu Lane operates as a contemplative archive, preserving the overlooked, the in between, and the soon to be lost.
