DI KOTA KECILKU
Keeping the quiet memories of Malaysia’s small towns.
In Di Kota Kecilku, Malaysian photographer Wan Nor Azriq turns his attention to the small towns, quiet streets, shopfronts and everyday landscapes that often go unnoticed. These are familiar places we pass through without a second thought, yet they hold fragments of memory that can easily fade with time.
Photographed predominantly in medium format, the work uses the square frame to give these ordinary scenes a sense of stillness and intimacy. The photographs feel like postcards preserved in an old family album, understated records of places, moments and details that might otherwise be forgotten. Influenced by Stephen Shore’s approach to photographing everyday life, Azriq allows these scenes to exist as they are, without imposing unnecessary drama or beauty.
For readers drawn to documentary photography, the changing landscapes of Malaysia, or the poetry of ordinary life, Di Kota Kecilku offers a reason to slow down and look again. It is a photobook to return to, especially for those who recognise something familiar in the towns and scenes it preserves.
Born in Alor Setar, Wan Nor Azriq grew up with a father who was both a teacher and a landscape painter.
By day, he works in marketing at a bank. In his spare time, he writes novels, reads extensively, and occasionally wonders why he owns so many cameras. Away from work and writing, he takes to the road with his camera, seeking out small towns, quiet streets and ordinary scenes that somehow become memories.
His ongoing photography project, Di Kota Kecilku, is an attempt to keep some of those memories from slipping away.
