Modern Shanghai is a decade-long photographic journey through a city constantly reshaping itself. Photographer Chen Ronghui looks at Shanghai with a measured, observant eye, moving between its rapidly changing urban landscape and the quieter lives unfolding within it.
Drawing inspiration from scholar Leo Ou-fan Lee’s writing on Shanghai’s modernity, Chen explores the tension between old and new, tradition and development, intimacy and spectacle. His photographs move from artificial landscapes and commercial spaces to street scenes and everyday encounters, revealing a Shanghai that exists beneath its polished, modern image.
Rather than presenting the city as simply glamorous or progressive, the book invites us to look more closely at what gets overlooked, the people, spaces and small moments that make up everyday life.

Chen Ronghui is a Chinese photographer currently based in Shanghai and New Haven. His work focuses on different dimensions of China’s urbanization and industrialization. He has published two photobooks, Freezing Land, and Land of Ambitions, and exhibited both in China and internationally. He has won a number of awards including the World Press Photo; BarTur Photo Award; Three Shadows Photography Award & AlPA special prize and Hou Dengke Documentary Photography.
