Celebrities, Semi-Celebrities and ordinary people: The Kodachromes of Sid Limitz 1975 – 2004
Celebrities, Semi-Celebrities, and Ordinary People
Photographs by Sid Limitz
With an introductory essay by Andrew S. Guthrie
Adapted interview by Brainard Carey
This is the first full-length, full-color print publication by tireless Boston-based photographer Sid Limitz. Featuring 57 digitized Kodachrome images, it also includes an insightful introductory essay by Andrew S. Guthrie, and an adapted radio interview conducted by Brainard Carey.
Since the early 1970s, Sid Limitz has been relentlessly documenting the world around him—using everything from humble 110 snap-and-shoot cameras and 35mm negatives to Kodachrome slides and modern digital tools. By his own count, he shoots more than 70,000 photographs every six months.
Celebrities, Semi-Celebrities, and Ordinary People presents a carefully curated selection of Limitz’s work on Kodachrome, his film stock of choice, spanning from the mid-1970s until the film's discontinuation in the 2000s.
Often described as a “street photographer,” Limitz is also affectionately known as a “soft-core paparazzo.” Unlike the aggressive tactics of celebrity hunters, Limitz wins over his subjects—whether they’re famous film stars or charismatic everyday individuals—with respect, curiosity, and charm.
The 57 portraits in this volume form a vivid tapestry of American identity during this period. They offer an honest, intimate look at those who stare back into the lens—celebrities, workers, eccentrics, and dreamers—all portrayed as they are and how they wish to be seen.
Among the many recognizable faces in this collection are John Waters, Patrick McGoohan, Sylvia Miles, Liza Minnelli, Christopher Reeve, and Leonard Bernstein.
This is more than a book of photographs—it's a celebration of personality, presence, and the quiet magic of being seen.
