Taiwanese photographer Tsai Ting-Bang (A-Bang) turns the camera inward in Born from the Same Root, a deeply personal work about his older brother, (A-Hsien).
As children, the two were inseparable—often mistaken for twins. But as they grew up, their lives diverged: A-Bang pursued filmmaking and photography, while A-Hsien, once a gifted artist, struggled with depression, insomnia, and illness. Their relationship, marked by rivalry, distance, and tenderness—becomes the subject of this haunting portrait of brotherhood.
The book unfolds as a gatefold, with A-Bang’s life on the left and A-Hsien’s on the right. Childhood snapshots give way to starkly different adult realities: one chasing artistic success, the other battling pain and survival. The dividing line between them is constant, yet their bloodline ties them together.
Originally published as a handmade edition of 100 by Shuhezi—winner of the Singapore Photography Book Award and shortlisted for the Arles Photobook Award—this second edition is limited to 500 copies. In 2024, Born from the Same Root became the first Taiwanese photobook to win the Paris Photo–Aperture Photobook Award.
About the Artist
Tsai Ting-Bang (b. 1999, Taoyuan), of Taiwanese-Vietnamese descent, began teaching himself photography at the age of twelve. His practice focuses on image- and book-based works. Other publications include Mother and Father and Beautiful Aunt Jin Yun.
