between here and elsewhere

Between Here and Elsewhere is a quiet study of place, perception, and the moments that exist between one breath and the next.
Rather than documenting a specific geography, Colin Yu photographs the world through mood. Familiar streets, architectural fragments, fleeting figures, windows, fences, chairs, shadows, and open spaces become fragments of an inner landscape. The photographs move between high-contrast black and white and atmospheric colour, creating a rhythm that feels closer to breathing than to a conventional photographic narrative.
The book’s sequencing is especially compelling. Black-and-white images arrive with graphic intensity, while colour photographs offer softer, more contemplative pauses. Blank pages act as moments of silence, allowing the viewer to slow down, reset, and sit with what came before. There is no fixed beginning, middle, or end—only a continuous movement between intensity and tenderness, presence and distance.
From a curatorial perspective, Between Here and Elsewhere is strongest in its restraint. Yu resists the urge to reduce every photograph to a single decisive subject. Instead, the surrounding space is allowed to remain part of the image. Shadows have weight, light has room to breathe, and seemingly ordinary environments acquire a quiet emotional gravity.
At the heart of the book is the idea of resonance: not necessarily what a photograph shows, but what it leaves behind after you have looked at it.
If you enjoy photobooks that reward slow looking, Between Here and Elsewhere is a particularly thoughtful addition to a collection.
This is not a book about chasing spectacular moments. It is about noticing the quieter ones—the pause between movements, the atmosphere of an empty space, the way light falls across a surface, or the feeling of being somewhere without quite knowing why.
For collectors of contemporary black-and-white and colour photography, the book offers an engaging study in sequencing and visual rhythm. For photographers, it is equally interesting as an example of how editing, pacing, negative space, and restraint can shape the emotional experience of a photobook.
Most importantly, this is a book to return to. Its photographs do not demand an immediate answer. They invite you to slow down, look again, and perhaps recognise something of your own experience in the spaces between here and elsewhere.
