A Kind of Magic is a photographic journey through a city that no longer exists. Moving between imagined and lived realities, the images open a portal to a temporal landscape irrevocably reshaped by external forces.
Rooted in Juliana’s personal experience of displacement during Indonesia’s 1998 period of unrest and racial tension, the work transforms an individual memory into a meditation on universal themes, displacement, remembrance, and the enduring quest to reclaim one’s story.
The photographs are accompanied by two essays from Indonesian writer Sylvie Tanaga and artist Metta Setiandi, who, like Juliana, experienced that turbulent era in their childhoods. Their distinct voices reflect on memory, identity, and the lasting echoes of that time.
