In A Hometown, Chinese photographer Zhang Xiao brings together more than a dozen bodies of work created since 2011, all centered on his home village in Yantai, Shandong. At times cool and observational, at others tender and nostalgic, the book traces Zhang’s evolving relationship with the idea of “hometown” amid China’s sweeping social and economic transformation.
Across these interconnected series, Zhang reconstructs the rural aesthetics of his childhood, juxtaposes village life with the country’s rapidly urbanizing cities, and portraits the people who anchor his memories. Layered with symbols, metaphors, and recurring motifs, the book forms a complex visual narrative about belonging, estrangement, and the shifting meaning of home.
