In 3DPRK, Slovenian photographer Matjaž Tančič presents a rare and visually striking body of stereoscopic portraits made in North Korea between 2014 and 2018. Created in collaboration with Koryo Studio, the project moves beyond the flatness of conventional representation, both literally and metaphorically.
Using 3D photographic techniques, Tančič renders his subjects with physical depth and spatial presence. The result is disarming. In a country often reduced to headlines and ideology, individuals emerge with dimension, texture, and humanity. The stereoscopic format subtly challenges the viewer’s assumptions, inviting a slower and more considered way of looking.
This second edition includes 10 new works photographed in 2018, expanding the series and reinforcing its significance as one of the most distinctive contemporary visual projects made in North Korea.
Tančič, based between Beijing and Ljubljana, began his career as a photojournalist and has received international recognition, including a Sony World Photography Award (3D category) and Slovenia Press Photo Award. His technical innovation and documentary sensitivity converge powerfully in this publication.
