What is photography? How does it work? How do photographs communicate? Why do we prefer certain images over others? Is photography powerful or limited? What is the politics of representation? How does photography affect us?

We will address these questions (and more) in this three-session short course. This lecture-based course offers an interdisciplinary way to understand photography, touching on its practice, its possibilities (and limits) and its (positive and negative) effects.

The course aims to be practical and will be taught in layman’s language. The intention is to equip you with a basic overview of photography, which will help your work in making photographs, designing photobooks and zines, writing about visuals and curating exhibitions, amongst others.

Course Structure

The course begins at the level of the photograph with a brief introduction on visual literacy.

We will learn to analyse an image and a sequence of photographs to understand how photography communicates.

We will talk about the politics of representation in photography. We will examine the relationship between the photographer, the photographed person(s) and the viewer(s), and how that affects photography.

In short, we will borrow from the disciplines of social history, visual anthropology and cultural studies to develop an interdisciplinary way of understanding photography.

Who is this course for?

Anyone interested in improving their visual literacy and understanding of photography. This includes photographers, designers, curators, and photography enthusiasts.

What will I take away?

You will come out equipped with a basic overview of photography, which will help your work in making photographs, designing photobooks and zines, writing about visuals and curating exhibitions, amongst others.
