Cyanotype Workshop with Balqis Tajalli
What if your photographs didn’t just live in your camera roll, but existed in your hands, inside a small book, or even on the fabric you carry with you?
In Print & Archive: Memory in Blue, participants will explore the journey from image to tangible archive through the historic cyanotype process, one of the earliest photographic printing techniques discovered by John Herschel in 1842.
During this four hour session, participants will learn how to transform their own images into digital negatives before printing them as cyanotypes using sunlight and simple chemistry. Film shooters are welcome 35mm and 120 negatives can also be used during the workshop.
The session will also explore layered cyanotypes, combining photographic negatives with organic materials such as leaves and flowers. These layered exposures allow memory and nature to overlap in quiet, unexpected ways.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will create:
• A series of cyanotype prints for a personal pocket archive
• A no-sew pocket book to hold and preserve their prints
• A small cyanotype fabric patch, a memory made portable
The fabric patch becomes a symbolic extension of the archive. It can be sewn onto a garment or bag, or kept as a tactile keepsake. Not all archives live on shelves, some travel with us.
Participants will also be guided through preparing digital negatives using Canva, alongside a sharing session featuring cyanotype project samples and a simple hand-binding demonstration. The workshop offers insight into how personal photographic archives can continue growing beyond a single afternoon.

This session is open to photographers, memory-keepers, and anyone who believes that preserving a moment should be as intentional as capturing it.
We understand that participants may sometimes be unable to attend a workshop. If this occurs, they are welcome to find a substitute to take their place. If a substitute cannot be found, cancellations and refunds will be handled as follows:
- If Zontiga cancels a workshop, all booking fees will be fully refunded.
- If a participant withdraws more than 72 hours before the workshop, a 50% refund will be issued.
- If a participant withdraws less than 72 hours before the workshop or does not attend, no refund will be issued.
Please note that we are not responsible for travel costs if the workshop is canceled, and refunds may take time to process depending on your bank or credit card company.
